Tokyo vs Seoul: Two Mega Cities Compared

I just got back from Seoul, and having been to Tokyo before, the difference was more obvious than I expected.

Both are big cities. Both are efficient. But they feel completely different once you’re actually there.

Tokyo feels controlled.

Everything is organized, quiet, and structured. Even busy areas like Shibuya don’t feel chaotic.

Seoul feels more expressive.

Lalo na in places like Hongdae—where I stayed. Kahit gabi, buhay pa rin yung paligid. Street performances, people walking around, shops still open.

You feel the city more.

Movement also feels different.

Tokyo’s train system is more complex. Very efficient, but you need time to get used to it.

Seoul is easier.

Mas straightforward, and after a few rides, you already feel comfortable moving around.

Energy-wise, Seoul stands out.

Tokyo feels calm even when busy.

Seoul feels alive—even in winter, kahit super lamig, people are still outside.

Lifestyle also feels different.

Tokyo feels more private.

Seoul feels more social. You see people hanging out, eating together, staying out late.

Both are worth it.

But if Tokyo is structured, Seoul is expressive.
