There are moments in a trip that don’t look big from the outside, but they stay with you longer than anything else.
For me, one of those moments happened inside Mama Luth’s place in Hiragishi.
It was quiet. No plans for the next few hours. Just staying in after being out in the cold.
I sat under the kotatsu for the first time.
At first, it felt simple. Just a table with a blanket and heat underneath. But once you sit there for a few minutes, you understand why people don’t want to leave it.
Outside, snow was falling steadily.
Hindi siya malakas. Just consistent. Slow. The kind you can watch without getting tired of it.
Inside, it was warm.
That contrast hits you.
From walking in freezing streets to sitting comfortably with heat around your legs, it makes you slow down without forcing it.
No rush. No need to go anywhere.
Just sitting there, watching snow fall outside a window in a place that isn’t yours — but for that moment, feels like it is.
There’s something about winter in Japan that creates these quiet pauses.
Not everything needs to be planned.
Some moments just happen when you stop moving.
And honestly, that stayed with me more than some of the places I visited.
