Nara is one of the easiest day trips you can do from Osaka or Kyoto.
Travel time is short, and most of the main spots are close to each other, so you don’t need to rush.
I did this as part of a Kyoto + Nara day trip, and it was very manageable.
Getting There
From Osaka or Kyoto, you can take the train directly to Nara.
Once you arrive, most places are walkable or just a short distance apart.
What Makes Nara Different
Nara is slower.
Less city, more open space. Parks, temples, and of course—the deer.
It’s not packed with attractions, but that’s exactly why it works well as a day trip.
Main Places to Visit
Nara Park
This is where you’ll see most of the deer.
They roam freely, so you’ll see them everywhere.
You can buy deer crackers and feed them—but be ready, they will come close 😅
Todai-ji Temple
One of the main highlights.
Big temple, and the Great Buddha inside is worth seeing.
Kasuga Taisha Shrine
Known for its lanterns. Slightly quieter compared to the main park area.
Kofuku-ji Temple
Near the entrance area, easy to pass by while walking.
Time Needed
You can comfortably explore Nara in half a day to one full day.
If you combine it with Kyoto, just manage your time properly.
